Get your Level of Freediving assessed!
Crossover Evaluation
At Freedive Flow on Gili Air you can get your level of freediving examined in a comprehensive evaluation – in the pool, in open water and in theory. If you already have a certification from any freedive organization or extensive experience in spearfishing and pool training you do not need to start your education with a beginner course when signing up with Freedive Flow for the first time.
Your Instructor will be able to permit you to skip courses, once your freediving skills and knowledge have undergone the Crossover Evaluation and have been proven to meet the requirements of a specific course other than the beginner courses.
These requested skills have to be demonstrated by applying a good command of technique. For example, it is not good enough to simply dive to the target depth somehow, you must be able to demonstrate a constant weight dive (CWT) with an efficient duck dive, good line orientation, efficient body posture, good finning and equalisation technique, a safe bottom turn and efficient use of buoyancy on the ascent.
Wave 1, Wave 2, AIDA2, AIDA3: 1 Day

Your instructor will assess your skills and knowledge during a minimum of:
- 1 pool session
- 1 open water session
- Written exam(s) and review
This is how it works: E.g. if you would like to join an advanced course (Wave 2 or AIDA3) with us, your instructor will evaluate you by following the beginner course completion form. This includes:

- DYN, buddying, rescue
- (DNF for Wave1-2)
- (Monofin-technique for Wave1-2)
- CWTB performance, buddying, rescue
- (CNF and CWT monofin for Wave 2)
- theory exam passed (paper or online)
If you would like to join a Master Level Course (Wave 3 or AIDA4) with us, your Instructor will evaluate you on “Advanced”-level, which includes:
- STA, buddying, rescue
- DYNB/DNF/DYN, buddying, rescue, CO2 table design and demonstration
- CWTB incl. use of lanyard & free fall, buddying, rescue
- (CNF and CWT monofin for Wave 3)
- theory exam(s) passed (paper or online)
These evaluations can be done in one intense day, but preferably it is done in two days.
Wave 3, AIDA4: 2 Days
Master Crossover Evaluation
Your Instructor will assess your skills and knowledge during a minimum of:
- 1-2 pool sessions
- 2 open water sessions
- exam(s) (paper or online)
Evaluation requirements
- STA performance, buddying, rescue
- DYN / DNF performance, buddying, rescue & pool exit, CO2 table
- Open water CWT/FIM/CNF, buddying, rescue, self rescue
- FRC dives, mouthfill, variable weight dives and setup for buddy
- Line setup and knots, leading a warm up, student control
Once you have sufficiently mastered all required skills taught in the preceding course you are allowed to enroll to the next course level.
In all cases you will get a comprehensive feedback of your level as a freediver – in the pool, in the open water and the classroom! In case you are not yet able to pass this evaluation comfortably, do not worry. After the evaluation and before the start of the next course your instructor will be able to offer you extra training sessions for the skills you need help with (not included in the evaluation).
Important note:
For years, AIDA used to maintain a “crossover-table” to evaluate which certification of other agencies allows you to enroll in a certain course of the AIDA Education System. However, the quickly growing freediving market made it difficult to keep a proper overview of all available certifications and related qualifications. Hence, to uphold the highest quality of AIDA standards, evaluations take place instead of direct crossovers. Crossover-tables can still be found online, but they are not valid anymore and have been replaced by the Crossover Evaluation as described on this page.
