AIDA Instructor Crossover Course
Freedive Flow on Gili Air is the school of Oli Christen, author of the original AIDA Education manuals. Freedive Instructors of any agency can crossover to become an AIDA Instructor. The AIDA Instructor Crossover Course is a shortened 5-day version of the full instructor course and is run by the competent team of ITs and senior instructors at Freedive Flow.
Minimum standards
To enroll as a AIDA Instructor Crossover Candidate you must
- provide a copy of your current freedive instructor certification
- pass the knowledge evaluation upon entry of the course: AIDA1-4 exams in 1.5h, pass-rate 90% (see folder in “AIDA-IC Freedive Flow”-Dropbox for according slide sets and manuals is available for your preparation).
To register as an AIDA Instructor you will also need:
- First Aid Certification (EFR or equivalent), no older than 2 years
- Dive insurance (e.g. DAN Pro)
Bring your own equipment, including:
- Lanyard
- Dive computer with freedive mode
- Laptop or tablet with all provided PDFs pre-loaded and the means to take notes. You should also be able to connect to a large TV via HDMI cable for your presentations.
- Action camera (GoPro or similar) and the means to analyse footage. This crossover course includes an intense training how to take and analyze video footage of students.
Performance requirements
These in water performance requirements must be demonstrated with a very high conduct of freediving technique:
- Static Apnea of 4-5 Minutes
- DYN performance at least 90m
- DNF performance of at least 50m
- CWT dive to a depth of 40-50m
- FIM dive to a depth of 40-50m
- Long CWT 30m Dive of at least 1:30
- Long FIM 30m dive of at least 2:00
- Deep rescue (25m) rescue followed immediately by 50m tow
- Hang at 15m for up to one minute followed by rescue
- Stamina test 5 x 20m CWT dives with one minute surface interval
- CNF to 20m
These requirements are evaluated in the according sessions (and not as an entry evaluation).
Misc. Info
- Oxygen kit on the boat for every open water session. The oxygen kit is for emergency only and not for deco.
- Inform your AIDA Instructor Trainer of any circumstances that might interfere with your performance, such as a foreign language background or dyslexia.
- Note that the breathe-up does not exist in AIDA Education anymore and has been replaced by the Relaxation Phase. Please read Chapter 3 in the AIDA2 manual and start preparing your dives accordingly.
Dates
The AIDA Crossover Course can be done during the full AIDA Instructor Course. As a Crossover-candidate you only need to attend the five first days (see chapter below).

- 4 Teaching sessions
- 1 Practical exam: Teaching in classroom (15 min)
- 2 Written AIDA Instructor Exams (1.5 h each)
- 1 Special presentation incl. hand-out: AIDA IC Special Presentation
Pool
- 1 STA session
- 1 DYN session
- 1 Practical exam each: Teaching a skill
Open Water
- 3 Open Water Sessions
- 1 Practical exam: Teaching a skill
Further examination
- Teaching exam: Warm-up & Stretching
- Teaching exam: Relaxation exercise and breathing technique
- Practical exam: Setting up dive site, ropes and knots
